It seems as though every time a lawyer involved on one side or the other of Donald Trump’s (il)legal shenanigans goes on television, America learns a little more about just how far the president and his team have gone to undermine fairness and democracy. But one unlikely player in all of this, the attorney to an adult film actress, appears to have more answers than just about anyone.
Michael Avenatti, lawyer for Stormy Daniels, has taken on a much larger role in the downfall of the Trump Empire than he probably ever could have imagined. And what started as a simple story in the Wall Street Journal about Avenatti’s counterpart, Michael Cohen, creating a shell company to pay off that adult actress just before the 2016 election in order to ensure she stayed silent about Donald Trump has turned into a much, much bigger narrative.
Following the revelation that Cohen’s “Essential Consultants LLC” firm was more than just a temporary name used to funnel $130,000 to Stormy Daniels, even the New York Times picked up on what turned out to be explosive findings by Avenatti, who is rapidly becoming the most famous lawyer in America. The attorney found that Essential Consultants LLC, Cohen’s shell company, had actually processed more than $4 million in transactions beginning just before the 2016 election — at the same time that Stormy Daniels was paid off for her silence — and continuing into January of 2018, fully a year after Trump’s inauguration.
But last night on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, Avenatti went even further than just proving that Essential Consultants was more than a porn star payoff gig. The fact that so much of the money that passed through EC was from a Russian oligarch, Viktor Vekselberg, for “unspecified services” showed Avenatti, at least until Trump and Cohen prove otherwise, that Michael Cohen was, as Trump’s personal emissary, selling access to the President of the United States.
Let me tell you: MUCH smaller fish have absolutely fried for this. Selling access to any political office is a felony — selling access to the President with money from a Russian oligarch is actual conspiracy.
The Stormy Daniels story just got much, much bigger, and it may just be that all of the memes you’ve been seeing on Facebook and Twitter will turn out to be true — maybe America is ironically saved from a pussy-grabber by a porn star in the end.
