A salon based in Iowa has become the center of a social media storm. The salon, called Salon Spa W, hosted the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump this week. On the business’ Facebook page, they posted a picture of Trump with local Governor Kim Reynolds stating that the two had visited the salon for an appointment saying “Our Monday kicked off with styling Ivanka Trump for her visit to Iowa! We [love] supporting women in politics,” the caption stated.
Ivanka was in town to see Waukee School District’s Aspiring Professional Experience program. She visited the establishment for a hair appointment and this caused frustration among many of the establishment’s customers.
One commenter, Lisa Munger Oakes, said what everyone was thinking about the salon:
“Will never book an appointment at this salon again. Total bum out. This salon employs hetereo/non-hetero individuals and this just truly sucks. The fact that Salon Spa W was inclusive was always a big A + to me. You put your money where your mouth is as your vote. I loved this salon. I’m so, so disappointed and I can’t imagine how your non-cisgender employees/clients feel. Fail. Won’t ever be back”
China Wong, the store’s owner, took to Facebook to discuss the objections, but concluded by saying “[we] also recognize impact matters more than intent.” She went on to say “We also serve you –– our beautiful, diverse, and passionate community. We proudly share our work and celebrate all of you because our purpose is making people look and feel beautiful.”
The owner was “taken aback” by the fierce backlash that followed the visit by the president’s daughter. She noted that President Obama had also visited the salon before becoming president and it created nowhere near the storm that Trump’s visit did.
The depth of feeling against the Trumps is really starting to take hold and this is just one more example of that. Americans up and down the country are fed up with Trump and his rhetoric and it now appears that he has successfully dragged the Trump name through the mud enough that it now sticks to his kids. To many Ivanka is only a bit part player, but it is clear that the public holds her every bit as responsible as her father and are willing to protest heavily at any use of her as an endorsement.
