Nikki Haley, American Ambassador to the United Nations, was lambasted by a Palestinian peace negotiator, where she was told to “shut up” when she started to criticize Mahmoud Abbas, the current president of the Palestinian Authority. Haley, like everyone in the Trump administration, has been an outspoken critic of Palestine and favored Israel at every step of what Trump is laughably calling a “peace process.”
Saeb Erekat, the secretary general of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, berated Haley for criticism of Abbas and a recent speech – a speech in which he called Israel a “colonial project that has nothing to do with Jews,” right before he attacked President Donald Trump and his recognition of Jerusalem as its capital.
During Erekat’s rebuttal of Haley, he accused her of calling for the overthrow of the “democratically elected Palestinian president.” In an interview with Al-Watan Voice, a journalistic hub for Palestinean news, Erekat added that “this is the president who led the peace process and promoted the principle of the two-state solution. Now this [US] ambassador is accusing him of lacking courage, and is calling for replacing him.”
In the past year, Haley became one of the more trusted members of Donald Trump’s inner circle – even though Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury” implies that her rise on the global stage was due to a purported affair between Haley and President Trump.
In the Trump administration, Haley has had to act somewhat like an unorthodox diplomat, serving in the traditional role of a UN ambassador, while also delivering their message from an undiplomatic president to allies and rivals.
Erekat’s remarks also touched upon a speech that Haley made back in January, where she said that President Abbas “insulted the American president,” accusing Abbas of positioning Israel as a “colonialist project engineered by European powers.” Citing that speech, Erekat said that she needed to shut up and realize that the “Palestinian leadership is not the problem.” Erekat cited the Israeli occupation and policies that it mandates that continue to undermine Palestine.
If Haley wants to be part of a peace process, maybe a little “peace” from her jibes is in order.
