Following Donald Trump’s disastrous State Of The Union speech in which he proceeded to mix insincere sympathy for victims of violence with gold ol’ fashioned racist demagoguery, Trump was captured on a hot mic promising Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) that he “100 percent” planned to release the controversial memo authored by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA).
“Great speech,” Duncan said following Trump’s State of the Union address. “Release the memo.”
“Oh yeah, don’t worry,” Trump replied. “100 percent.”
Trump’s wink and smile promise is a direct contradiction of the White House’s official position on the memo that accuses the FBI and the DOJ of surveillance abuse during the 2016 presidential election. Despite reports that Trump was inclined to authorize the release of the memo, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Tuesday that Trump had not yet made a decision regarding its release.
“Contrary to a published report, there are no current plans to release the House Intelligence Committee’s memo,” Sanders said. “The President has not seen or been briefed on the memo or reviewed its contents.”
That statement was made literally just before Trump was scheduled to give his speech, with absolutely zero chance that he’d have had the time or even the inclination to read or be briefed on the contents of the memo, which means that Sanders was lying to the public — shocker — or that Trump was lying to his Press Secretary.
Of course, this should come as no real surprise. Asking Trump if he’d like to release a memo that would distract people from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation is like asking him if he’d like an extra bucket of KFC or a blonde Russian prostitute with a full bladder (allegedly). But be that as it may, expect Republicans and Fox News to wave this meaningless document in the air while calling for an end to Mueller’s investigation.
Yeah, good luck with that.
