    Education, News, Politics

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was clearly in Halloween spirits by getting into character as Ms. Frizzle from “The Magic School Bus.” Ms. Frizzle is a teacher who’s been leading her students on adventures for more than two decades. In direct contrast to DeVos, Frizzle was a liberal-leaning and open-minded character, whereas DeVos is known for her ultra-conservative stance on many political issues.

The move has been unpopular with many in the media who feel that her portrayal is an affront to the popular character. The Cut’s Senior Writer Gabriella Paiella demanded, “Betsy DeVos how dare you besmirch the good name and honor of Ms. Frizzle!!!” Others have noted that DeVos is a miserable jerk and should not compare herself to such a beloved character.

Her ultra-conservative behavior has resulted in a rescinding of documents that detail the rights of disabled students, and revoked guidelines for sexual assaults on campuses across the country. She also took the extreme step of overturning the Obama-era policy of allowing transgender children to use the bathrooms of the gender they identify with. The last item was disappointing to many who saw the move as a big step in progressive rights for transgender children.

Well known for causing controversy, it appears that DeVos cannot even enjoy Halloween without causing a stir. The controversial Education Secretary is a star of the right wing and one of Trump’s key footsoldiers. Perhaps next year she may want to dress more appropriately and take into account the public mood that surrounds her and her beliefs.

    As expected, Twitter roasted her:

The Magic School Bus is enjoying something of a revival after Netflix picked up the show with a view to reprising it this year. Perhaps the idea of DeVos as one of its stars may be enough to change their mind and put the show back in the can.
